WINE TASTING
Conde
de Siruela - Ribera
del Duero
Conde
de Siruela started in the Ribera del
Duero in 1988 by Bodegas Frutos Villar.
They own 200 hectares of vineyards of
Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape
varietal. The Vineyards, planted on
alluvial soils, are facing the river's
sunny spot and protected by the river's
basin. The modern facilities are designed
to continue tradition.
Tasting:
Conde de Siruela Tinto 4 Meses
Barrica 2005
Conde de Siruela Reserva 2001
VALDELENA
- RIOJA ALAVESA
Tinto Joven 2005
Bodegas
Valdelena is a family-owned cellar,
growing grapes and making wines since
the 16th century. The cellar also houses
a museum containing vineyard artifacts
including the oldest document related
to the winemaking in the cellar, dated
1583.
The
Tinto Joven was rated among the Top
100 Values with 90 points from Wine
& Spirits Magazine.
MIBAL
- Ribera del Duero 2004
"The
2004 Mibal was aged for 12 months
in previously used French oak. A glass-coating
opaque purple color, the wine's aromatics
need to be coaxed from the glass,
a demonstration of this wine's youth.
On the palate the raw materials are
there, densely packed and tightly
wound. The ripe black fruit flavors
are still undeveloped but very promising.
All of the components are in harmony
needing only 4-6 years in bottle to
strut their stuff. It is hard to believe
that so little money can buy so much
wine. If I were a young collector
unable to afford Bordeaux or boutique
Cabernet, I'd be buying the 2004 Mibal
by the case. A true "garage" Bodegas
(the winery is in a garage in the
town of Roa), these small production
cuvees of 100% Tempranillo are uniformly
outstanding."
-Wine Advocate-
91 points Robert Parker
Mas
de Leda 2004
Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y
Leon
This Bodega started in 1998 and
is located in the picturesque village
of Tudela de Duero with the river to
one side of the building. The winemaking
is overseen by Mariano Garcia, the most
important winemaker of the Region, and
possibly Spain. He spent 30 years at
Vega Sicilia and since 1991 has helped
Mauro become one of the top wines of
the region. The grapes are completely
bought in and are carefully selected
by them. The vines are at least 50 years
old and they control the quality of
the grape to such an extent that they
manage the picking of them during harvest.
The fermentation tanks were specifically
designed by the Technical Director Cesar
Muñoz and an original sketch still
hangs in his laboratory. They are conical
in shape and are jacketed so as to control
temperature and hold 20000 litres. They
used to only make one wine but since
2003 they began making this one as their
second wine as they realised that there
was still good grape that could be used
once their initial selection was made.
This wine still spends 12 months in
French oak (95%) and American oak (5%).
This wine is all about the skill of
the winemaker and his opinion on producing
a quality wine.

PALACIOS
REMONDO
ALVARO
PALACIOS RIOJA ESTATE
CRIANZA "LA MONTESA"
2004
"The vineyards at
Palacios Remondo are organically farmed
and the wines are bottled unfiltered
and unfined. The 2004 Crianza "Montesa"
is a blend of 45% Tempranillo, 40%
Garnacha, and 15% Graciano and Mazuelo
with ageing in French oak. It is an
elegant example of Rioja with smoky
red currant, cherry and herbal aromas
and flavors, ripe, silky tannins and
a lengthy finish."
(Wine Advocate - Feb-2007)
TINTO "LA VENDIMIA" 2006
The Vendimia from Alvaro Palacios
is a fresh fruity modern style of
Rioja made from 100% Tempranillo that
spends about 4 months in new French
oak. Bottled with no filtration this
wine is an excellent introduction
to the style of this once again rising
star of Rioja.
